When a site prompts you for information about yourself such as your name, and then throughout the site, your name seems to be remembered, a variable is used to make this happen. It may sound confusing, but after you review the following steps you will have a better idea of how a variable works in the scenario that was just painted. You will see how a text variable in flash can recall something as simple as a name. First you will create the static text blocks that explain what the user needs to type in the input text fields. Select the text tool from the toolbar and in the properties inspector text type pop up list, select static text. Also, select a font type of Arial or verdant, a font size of 24 points, a black fill color, and a right alignment. Click somewhere in the left side of the stage and type in name. Press ENTER/RETURN two tomes and type hello. Now, you will set the attributes for the text fields that reside to the right of the static text. For text type in the properties inspector, select input text.

Click the show border button so that the text field will have a border around it in the movie. This indicates to the user where they should type the text. For line type, select single line in the pop up list. In the vary text box, type name. This becomes the variable name for the input field. Change alignment for this field to left because you will want the text the user types in to appear after the instruction. Leave the other attributes in the properties inspector unchanged. Now, you will make the input text field into which the user will type his or her name. Click and drag the cursor to the right of the "Name" static text block to make a single line text input field. Make sure that the width of the text field is large enough to accommodate a viewer’s first name. if it is not, simply select the text tool again, click in the text field, position your pointer on the handle in the bottom right, and drag the square handle to expand the width. Don’t worry about aligning the text boxes vertically. You can do that later. Next, you need to make an input text field to the right of the word "Hello".

Instead of starting from scratch and making another input text field, duplicate the previous input text field. The easiest way to do this is to press ALT-SHIFT and then click the input text field with the selection tool. A plus sign appears at the bottom right of your pointer, indicating that you are about to duplicate an object. Drag the duplicate input text field down until it is approximately aligned with the word "Hello" from the static text block. If you want the hello response to look more natural when a person’s name appears next to it, get rid of the border around the accompanying input text field.
